  • Best Paper Awards (2016 - 2015)

My paper "Player Behavior Modeling for Interactive Storytelling in Games" has received the "best paper award" in the XV Brazilian Symposium on Computer Games and Digital Entertainment (SBGames 2016).

The paper, which is co-authored by Bruno Feijó (PUC-Rio) and Antonio L. Furtado (PUC-Rio), explores the combination of player modeling and narrative generation techniques. We propose a novel approach for interactive storytelling in games based on player behavior modeling, hierarchical task decomposition and nondeterministic planning. The proposed method is capable of generating dynamic and nondeterministic quests that are directly or indirectly affected by in-game player behavior, which is modeled in terms of the Big Five factors.

In 2015, my research on Interactive Storytelling was also awarded. My paper "Storytelling Variants: The Case of Little Red Riding Hood" has received the "best paper award" in the 14th International Conference on Entertainment Computing (ICEC 2015). This paper was also co-authored by Antonio L. Furtado (PUC-Rio) and Bruno Feijó (PUC-Rio).

  • International Conference on Entertainment Computing (ICEC 2015) and SBGames 2015

My paper "Storytelling Variants: The Case of Little Red Riding Hood" has been accepted as a full paper at ICEC 2015 (International Conference on Entertainment Computing).

In the paper, taking Little Red Riding Hood as example, we review a small number of variants of this universally cherished story, in an attempt to understand how variants emerge. The study is founded on the classification of types and motifs contained in the Index of Antti Aarne and Stith Thompson, and examines the hypothesis that variants are often the consequence of type interactions, which we propose to characterize in terms of semiotic relations associated with the so-called four master tropes.

ICEC 2015 will be held in Trondheim, Norway in 30th September – 02th October, 2015.

I also have three papers accepted at the XIV Brazilian Symposium on Computer Games and Digital Entertainment (SBGames 2015): Types, Motifs and the Emergence of Variants (full paper), Applying Digital Storytelling to Information System Domains (short paper), and Geração Procedural de Mapas para Jogos 2D (short paper).

The fourteenth edition of SBGames will be held in Teresina, Brazil in 11th November – 13th November, 2015.

  • International Conference on Advances in Computer Entertainment Technology 2014

My paper "Hierarchical Generation of Dynamic and Nondeterministic Quests in Games" has been accepted as a full paper at ACE 2014 (International Conference on Advances in Computer Entertainment Technology).

The International Conference on Advances in Computer Entertainment Technology is the most prestigious conference in the field of entertainment computing.

My paper presents a new method for the generation of dynamic quests based on hierarchical task decomposition and planning under nondeterminism. The proposed approach combines planning, execution and monitoring to efficiently handle nondeterministic events and support quests with multiple endings that affect the game's narrative and create interactive and dynamic story plots that are directly or indirectly affected by player's actions and decisions.

ACE 2014 will be held in Funchal, Madeira in 11th – 14th November, 2014.

  • International Conference on Advances in Computer Entertainment Technology 2013

    ACE 2013

My paper "Non-Branching Interactive Comics" has been accepted as a full paper at ACE 2013 (International Conference on Advances in Computer Entertainment Technology).

The International Conference on Advances in Computer Entertainment Technology is the most prestigious conference in the field of entertainment computing. Interactive entertainment is one of the most vibrant areas of interest in modern society and is amongst the fastest growing industries in the world.

My paper explores the use of artificial intelligence techniques to blend narrative generation and interactive comics. It presents a non-branching interactive comic system capable of generating dynamic interactive narratives in the format of comic books. The system allows users to freely intervene in the stories by interacting with the scene objects, and then observe the consequences of their actions in the unfolding story.

ACE 2013 will be held in Enschede, Netherlands in 13th – 15th November, 2013.

  • Honorable Mentions from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)

The interactive narrative "Little Gray Planet" created by me and some colleagues won an "Honorable Mention - Interactivity" from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in the 2nd ITU IPTV Application Challenge.

The ITU is the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies.

Little Gray Planet” is an educational interactive story that tells the importance of preserving the environment and the consequences that harmful acts have in the world environment. The application is presented in a format that we called “Interactive TV Comics”, a new form of interactive content designed for TV. It combines the traditional style of comic books with interactivity, creating a new experience for TV viewers.

Last year my video-based interactive narrative "The Princess Kidnapping" also won an "Honorable Mention - Innovation" from the ITU in the 1st ITU IPTV Application Challenge.
